Film Study: What To Watch As A Defensive Back
Film study will be a valuable part of your preparation for a game. Film study time should be taken extremely seriously, and athletes need to use the time to analyze tendencies, patterns and habits. I understand that your coach may have a session with the team before or after practice, but you should take a moment to do your own private film session.
Defensive Backs: What To Study
-
Study your opponent's top 5 formations. You need to have an idea where you will align based on the position of the offense. For example, cornerbacks need to know if the receiver aligns in a cut, normal or wide split.
-
Take a look at the personnel you will be competing against. Are the receivers tall, short, fast, slower, shifty, etc.
-
Review the offensive pass concepts to prepare for the routes you will see in the game. Go a little deeper learn what concepts the quarterback likes on short, medium and longer down and distances (1st, 2nd & 3rd down).
-
Study how the receivers and tight ends run routes. The quarterbacks go to receiver.
-
Quarterbacks arm strength, percentage of deep throw versus medium and short throws. Is the QB right hand dominant or left.
-
The film will show you the amount of run plays vs pass attempts
