No player enjoys losing a rep in man to man coverage. I have competed on the same teams as Hall of Fame athletes (Champ Bailey, John Lynch) and they were beat from time to time. What I am trying to say is this, everyone gets beat but how do you give yourself the advantage.
Think about your skill level. Are you better at press man coverage or off-man coverage.
Understand the down and distance because it can reveal the choice of route at time
Know the alignment of the receiver you are covering. See if the receiver is lined up in a cut, normal or wide split. Many times this will give you an idea of what the route could be.
Understand the skills of the receiver. Is he a mover or a shaker. Is he a guy with speed or not as fast
Understand the leverage you are protecting and work hard to keep it
Take a position on top if you do not have immediate safety help and play a trail technique if you do have help.
Understand the keys.
Know the down and distance
Is the receiver a mover or shaker
Does the receiver have elite speed or slower
Is the route runner a bigger body or smaller
Keep your eyes disciplined
Finish ever rep
Compete in every rep
The tips above will make you a better player. It's important that you are athletic with great skill but you also have to be intelligent. Your football IQ must improve to be effective in the sport of football
