Coaches, also known as instructors are seen as an individual you can respect and you give them authority to lead. When becoming a coach, you have a responsibility to challenge your student and effectively deliver methods for improvement. It is also the coach’s responsibility to pursue a real relationship with their athletes, students, employees, etc.

Consequently, the role of the coach will be many and varied, from instructor, assessor, friend, mentor, facilitator, chauffeur, demonstrator, adviser, supporter, fact finder, motivator, counselor, organizer, planner and the Fountain of all Knowledge. Coaches need to have competence, be caring, show confidence and display good character. Being able to build a connections with your client is also important.

Their job is to tell you the tougher things that could take your talent to the next level and not to be your cheerleader all the time. Not every coach has experienced the levels you are trying to achieve so once you find one who has, listen to what they have to say.

Choosing The Right Coach

It doesn't matter if you are an athlete or trying to build a business, you need a quality coach for guidance. Think about the things listed below before you commit to your instructor.

Know and understand what you want to be worked on.

Determine if the coach has the qualifications to help you improve. Credentials are important and experience matters.

Do you want a tougher coach or someone who will nurture you. Some athletes struggle with criticism and reject tough love. Coaches should show a good balance of praise and critique. Never choose a coach that personally attacks you.

Research and learn more about what the coach has done for other. What are their success stories?

Whatever characteristics a coach possesses, success is not guaranteed if the coach does not feel a need to improve. Successful coaches continually look for ways to improve.

Lastly, make sure you and your instructor have matching drives and goals. Make sure there is good chemistry between the two of you

In my previous blog, I wrote about Trusting Your Training but in order to accomplish that, you need a great coach to assist you. Make sure you choose the right coach.
