What Do College Coaches Look For In The Defensive Backs They Recruit?

Lots of coaches look for the size of the player. Many shy away from the shorter corners because of the taller receivers teams recruit.

Some institutions want to see swift hips and speed.

Defensive backs that have acceleration out of their breaks

Players that have quick change of direction are targeting in the recruiting process

With cornerbacks, your ability to chase-from-behind matter. We call that catch up speed

In safeties, toughness and physicality is a good look. You are in the run game at time and the pass plays so have balance

Safeties and corners need to either be a sure tackler or big hitter.

Recruiters want defensive backs that can play the ball in the air and make the big interceptions to change the game.

Coaches do evaluate 40s, shuttles, vertical and broad jumps in the process. They don't trust many of the high school tested times so go to their camps to showcase your ability

Corners need to be comfortable playing man and zone coverages

Safeties you also display range and closing speed

Safeties also need to be able to diagnose plays quickly
