WELCOME

Jovon Johnson: All right, I appreciate you guys taking the time out of your day to go over the three high safety defensive structures. I'm gonna talk about a lot of different aspects of it and hopefully, I can give you guys an idea of how we do it and, the structure behind, what it creates and the advantages and disadvantages of playing this defense.

Jovon Johnson: First and foremost, I appreciate Rod for giving me the platform to talk to you guys and at the same time, I appreciate you guys for getting on here to spend a little time talking some ball

Making Adjustments

Jovon Johnson:  So, number one  thing for us in the three high safety defenses, you have to be a master of adjusting because in theory, there's a lot of different intricate parts to it. A lot of people will change personnel on you. a lot of people will do a lot of different things to try to get you to adapt. so you got to number one think about, your personnel, which we call them puzzle pieces. and you have to be able to plug and play guys in different spots to make sure that they're successful and effective in what you're trying to get accomplished.

Jovon Johnson: So, in our puzzle pieces, we want to identify the body types of that middle safety player, depending on how you structure your three high defense, is a glorified linebacker. or he could be an instinctive safety, like the Caleb DS of the world and guys like that that can mix it up in the box, but also be very effective in coverage.  The second most important thing when running a three high structure is when teams change, you have to change. You cannot stay in a three high safety when you're playing against12 or 13 personnel.

3 personnel.

Adaptability

Jovon Johnson: The third thing I think is adaptability.  I think you can manipulate a lot of different things in the three high structures because of the angles and the different nuances that it creates, the issues that it creates for the offense. but that comes from being able to adapt and just kind of how you structure your coverages and things to make sure they fit. and then it's amazing at defending the RPO in the spread game. because ultimately you're putting guys in those windows right now.

Jovon Johnson: You're not giving them the pitcher that they want offensively. A lot of teams are going to try to just run the ball downhill on you, but that doesn't become effective because you got the interior forward, which I'll talk about here soon. They're plugging the A's and the B's and how you get there, that's a technique that we'll talk about. but they're plugging those interior four gaps in the A's and B's. and then it creates unique blocking angles because of the three structures up front. The angles are very different from your traditional four offensive linemen typically when you move guys and you create those moving pieces. Those guys tend to start chasing.

Jovon Johnson: Just that split second of hesitation of an offensive lineman and him not staying on his tracks, it gives you an advantage to be able to run through gaps, linebackers seeing window closed, being able to plug and play fast. So, one thing we talk about in our defense is playing fast and fearless. We use the term fast as family always stays together. But at the end of the day, that acronym of fast means play with outstanding speed and relentless effort. So, that's kind of what we use. That's the model we use
